The American Checkers game holds a special place in gaming history. It was one of the first games played on computers, with Arthur Samuel's 1959 checkers program being a landmark achievement in artificial intelligence. Today, checkers remains one of the most studied and beloved strategy games in the world. The game's beauty lies in its apparent simplicity hiding genuine complexity. With approximately 500 billion billion (5×10^20) possible positions, American Checkers offers far more strategic depth than its simple rules suggest. The mandatory capture rule is the key mechanic that separates checkers from many other board games. Because you must jump when you can, advanced players craft positions where opponents are forced into disadvantageous captures. This "sacrifice and capture" dynamic creates exciting, dramatic games where a single brilliant combination can reverse a losing position. Our digital version preserves everything that makes American Checkers great while adding the convenience of AI opponents, online multiplayer, and play-anywhere accessibility. Every rule is faithfully implemented, ensuring that your online experience develops the same skills as playing on a physical board.
About This Game
Experience the timeless American Checkers game right in your browser. This is the same game generations have enjoyed — 12 pieces on an 8×8 board, diagonal moves, forced jumps, and king promotion. How to Play
Set up is automatic — your 12 pieces start on the dark squares of your three closest rows. Click a piece to select it, and the available moves will be highlighted. Click a highlighted square to move. When captures are available (shown by highlighted jump destinations), you must make a capture. Multi-jump sequences are completed within the same turn. Reach the far row with any piece to have it promoted to a King. Kings are marked with a crown symbol and can move backward as well as forward.
Strategy Tips
- 1Play your opening moves toward the center rather than the edges. Central pieces are more flexible.
- 2Never break your back row without a good reason. Back-row pieces protect against kings.
- 3Look two moves ahead. Before moving a piece, ask: what captures am I creating for my opponent?
- 4Kings are powerful but not invincible. Use two regular pieces to corner and trap an enemy king.
- 5In the endgame with few pieces, a king advantage is often decisive. King your pieces as quickly as possible.
