International Draughts is the premier variant of the checkers/draughts family, recognized by the World Draughts Federation (FMJD) for official world championship competition. Its origins trace back to 17th century France, where players expanded the traditional 8×8 game to a 10×10 board for greater complexity. The flying king rule transformed the game dramatically — a single king can control an entire diagonal, creating tactical possibilities unlike anything in American Checkers. Combined with the maximum capture rule, this creates positions where a single move can capture half the opponent's army through an elaborate chain of jumps. The beauty of International Draughts lies in the combination of strategic depth and tactical excitement. Positional play establishes advantages gradually, while tactical combinations can exploit those advantages in spectacular fashion. Multi-jump combinations in draughts are among the most beautiful and complex tactical sequences in all of board gaming, sometimes requiring visualization of 8 or more consecutive jumps.
About This Game
Experience International Draughts on a full 10×10 board with 20 pieces per side. This version features flying kings that move any distance diagonally and the maximum capture rule — you must always take the sequence that captures the most pieces. Play against AI or challenge friends online. International Draughts is the most strategically deep variant of the checkers family, offering spectacular multi-jump combinations and complex positional battles.
How to Play
International Draughts is played on the dark squares of a 10×10 board. Each player starts with 20 pieces on the dark squares of their closest four rows. Regular pieces move diagonally forward one square. Captures are made by jumping over adjacent enemy pieces. When a piece reaches the opposite back row, it becomes a flying king that can move AND capture any number of squares diagonally. The maximum capture rule requires you to choose the capture sequence that takes the most pieces when multiple options are available. The game ends when one player captures all opposing pieces or leaves the opponent with no legal moves.
Strategy Tips
- 1Flying kings dominate the board. Promoting your pieces while preventing your opponent's promotions is the most important strategic goal.
- 2Always count carefully when multiple capture sequences are available — the maximum capture rule can lead to unexpected forced combinations.
- 3The 10×10 board creates more space for tactical combinations. Multi-jump captures of 3, 4, or even 5 pieces are common in skilled play.
- 4Positional play is more important in draughts than in checkers. Control key diagonal lines and restrict your opponent's piece mobility.
- 5Study the "coup" concept — sacrificing pieces to create forced capture sequences that win more material in return.
- 6Kings can control entire diagonals. Placing a king on a long diagonal gives enormous influence over the board.
