Online Board Games offers one of the best free chess experiences available on the web. Our chess engine provides five distinct difficulty levels that adapt to your skill. Beginners can start with Level 1, where the AI makes intentional mistakes to help new players gain confidence. As you improve, each subsequent level adds deeper calculation and stronger positional understanding, with Level 5 providing a formidable challenge even for club-level players. The online multiplayer system uses simple room codes — create a game, share the 6-character code with a friend, and you are connected instantly with real-time moves and in-game chat. Spectators can watch any public match live, making it a great way to learn from stronger players. Our chess implementation follows all standard FIDE rules including castling, en passant, pawn promotion, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, and stalemate detection. Every game can be played without creating an account, but registered users can track their statistics, climb the leaderboard, and compete in daily challenges.

How to Play
Chess is played on an 8×8 board between two players. White moves first, and players alternate turns. Each piece type has its own movement rules: pawns move forward one square (two on their first move), knights jump in an L-shape, bishops move diagonally, rooks move in straight lines, queens combine bishop and rook movement, and the king moves one square in any direction. The objective is to checkmate your opponent's king — putting it under attack with no legal escape. Special moves include castling (king and rook swap for safety), en passant (a special pawn capture), and pawn promotion (pawns reaching the far rank become queens or other pieces).
Strategy Tips
- 1Control the center of the board with pawns and pieces early in the game — squares e4, d4, e5, and d5 are the most important.
- 2Develop your knights and bishops before moving the same piece twice. Getting your minor pieces into the game quickly creates more options.
- 3Castle early to protect your king and connect your rooks. A king stuck in the center is vulnerable to attacks.
- 4Avoid moving pawns in front of your castled king — each pawn move creates permanent weaknesses.
- 5Look for tactical patterns like forks, pins, and skewers. These double-attack combinations win material and games.
- 6Think about your opponent's threats before making your move. Ask yourself: what is their plan?
