Checkers strategy can be organized into three main categories: tactical, positional, and endgame. Tactical strategy focuses on forced capture sequences (shots) and combinations. A well-prepared shot can win two or three pieces in exchange for one, dramatically shifting the balance of the game. Positional strategy is about controlling key squares, maintaining defensive formations, and restricting your opponent's options. The most important positional concept is center control — pieces in the center of the board have maximum flexibility and influence. Endgame strategy becomes critical when few pieces remain. King coordination, tempo control, and knowledge of theoretical positions determine whether you can convert advantages into wins or save disadvantageous positions. One of the most important intermediate concepts is understanding the "opposition" — similar to chess, the player who controls whose turn it is in certain endgame positions holds the advantage.
