American Checkers has been a staple of family game collections for over a century. Its accessibility makes it one of the first strategy games many people learn, yet its depth has sustained competitive play at the highest levels for generations. The World Checkers/Draughts Championship for American-style checkers has been held since the 19th century, and the game continues to have a vibrant competitive community. What makes American Checkers particularly interesting is the mandatory capture rule. Unlike chess, where capturing is optional, in checkers you must jump when possible. This creates situations where you can force your opponent into disadvantageous captures — a concept called "shot plays." The best checkers players excel at creating these forced sequences that win material through clever positional preparation. Our implementation faithfully reproduces the American Checkers experience with accurate rules enforcement, including mandatory captures, chain jumps, and king promotion. The three AI difficulty levels provide appropriate challenges for players of all abilities, from beginners learning the game to experienced players looking for serious competition.
About This Game
American Checkers — also known as English Draughts — is the classic 8×8 version of checkers that millions of people grew up playing. Twelve pieces per side, diagonal movement, mandatory captures, and king promotion. Simple rules that create surprisingly complex strategic possibilities. Play online for free against AI opponents at three difficulty levels or challenge friends through our multiplayer system.
How to Play
American Checkers is played on an 8×8 board using only the 32 dark squares. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of their closest three rows. Red (or dark) pieces traditionally move first. Pieces move diagonally forward one square at a time. To capture, jump over an adjacent opponent's piece to the empty square beyond. If a chain of jumps is available, you must complete the entire chain. When a piece reaches the opposite back row, it is crowned a King and gains the ability to move and capture backward. The game ends when one player has no pieces remaining or cannot make a legal move.
Strategy Tips
- 1The center four squares are the most powerful positions on the board. Fight to control them from the opening.
- 2Keep a strong back row as long as possible. Losing back-row pieces allows your opponent to king easily.
- 3Look for "shot" plays — sacrificing one piece to set up a multi-jump capture that wins two or more pieces.
- 4Single corner squares (top-left and bottom-right on a standard board) are strong defensive positions.
- 5When ahead in pieces, trade aggressively. Simplification makes it easier to use your numerical advantage.
- 6Practice the "dog-hole" trapping technique — cornering an opponent's piece so it has no moves.
