Checkers is widely regarded as one of the best gateway games for developing strategic thinking. Its simple rules make it accessible to children as young as 4-5 years old, while its depth provides lifelong engagement. Unlike many modern board games with complex rule sets, checkers can be taught in minutes, allowing new players to focus on strategy rather than rules from their very first game. For beginners, the mandatory capture rule is the most important concept to internalize. In many other games, capturing is optional. In checkers, if you can jump an opponent's piece, you must do so. This rule fundamentally shapes the strategy of the game because it allows experienced players to create forced capture sequences that win multiple pieces. As a beginner, simply remembering to check for captures before every move will dramatically improve your play. Our Easy AI is specifically designed as a learning tool. It makes intentional mistakes that create opportunities for beginners to practice captures and king promotion. It plays well enough to feel like a real opponent but forgivingly enough that new players can win and build confidence.
About This Game
Never played checkers before? No problem. Checkers is one of the easiest strategy games to learn — you can understand the rules in under five minutes and start playing your first game immediately. Our Easy AI opponent is designed to help beginners learn without frustration, making mistakes that create learning opportunities while still providing a meaningful game experience.
How to Play
Checkers uses an 8×8 board. You play on the dark squares only. Each player has 12 pieces. Your pieces start on the dark squares of the three rows closest to you. Pieces move diagonally forward, one square at a time. To capture an enemy piece, jump over it to the empty square beyond. If you can make a capture, you must (it is mandatory). If you can chain multiple jumps, you must complete the entire chain. When your piece reaches the opponent's back row, it becomes a King (shown with a crown) and can move backward too. You win by capturing all enemy pieces or by blocking them so they cannot move.
Strategy Tips
- 1Focus first on understanding mandatory captures — this is the most important rule in checkers.
- 2Don't rush forward with every piece. Keeping some pieces back provides defensive coverage.
- 3When you have a King, use its backward movement to create threats from unexpected angles.
- 4Practice against Easy AI until you win 3-4 games in a row, then try Medium.
- 5Watch how the AI moves. Even easy AI demonstrates basic concepts like piece development and king promotion.
